In December, 2008, we went on an Elderhostel trip to the Southern Hemisphere. We picked the specific itinerary based on two things: Jim wanted to make the trip over the Andes by lake and Mary Ellena wanted to see Tierra del Fuego. Antarctica and the Falkland Islands were lagniappe.

As it turned out, the recession had discouraged many travelers – only ten were in our group plus our Elderhostel subject matter expert, Dr. Michael Doyle. The country was deep into recession so not many folks were game to be big spenders, and the program had come within an inch of being cancelled. For our part, we felt we got a better return on our investment with this trip than by leaving the money in the stock market!
