One of the notable things about Saas-Fee was the multitude of carved grotesques. Roots, trees, buildings – all provided the basis for whimsical or threatening images.

Wood-carving is supposed to be a feature of Swiss villages, but I've been unable to find an explanation of the tradition – how it got started or what (if anything) it is supposed to indicate.
